Blast From The Past (Part 2)

    2012 - 02.08

Now it’s time for round two. We’re getting into the top 20 songs, and choosing which ones to use is becoming increasingly more difficult. Although it may be tough, I’m confident that I’m choosing the songs that are most appropriate / most appealing for this post. Get money.

    .

#20 – Mid sophomore year, Big Sean was put on the list of my top 5 favorite rappers. Since his first mixtape, Finally Famous, Sean has been going in on every track he has ever been on. I never thought that he would become famous, which I was fine with, but then I was proved wrong when I started hearing songs from his album, also titled Finally Famous, on the radio. This song will pick you up when your down, and although Sean has grown as a rapper, it will forever remain one of my favorite songs.

Big Sean – All my Life

    .

#19 – Do I really need to say anything here? “Jumper” is one of the most classic songs of all time, and it reminds me of one of the most classic younger brother moments of all time: the first time visiting your sibling at college.

    Third Eye Blind – Jumper

    .

#18 – Before The Adventures of Bobby Ray released back in 2010 I was not really into B.o.B. Although the Album got some criticism, I thought it was absolutely spectacular. It had multiple radio hits giving it great commercial success, but “Lovelier Than You” will forever remain my favorite track on the album. It brings me back to the spring of junior year, at a time when the birds started chirping, flowers started blossoming, and the trips to the beach after school became daily. No song makes my mind more at peace than this song right here.

    B.o.B. – Lovelier Than You

    .

#17 – Nas’ first album (and my first ever rap album), Illmatic, will forever remain one of the greatest rap albums of all time. Although I got Illmatic in third grade, Nas’ music stopped interesting me, until the sixth grade when I got heavily into rap once again. He became one of my favorite rappers, and after downloading Illmatic to my computer I went on iTunes and purchased his album God’s Son. Little did I know I was going to find one of my favorite songs of all time. This remix of Tupac’s “Thugz Mansion” reminds us all that there is a better place that we will all eventually reach, and always seems to calm me down whenever I’m worked up.

Nas – Thugz Mansion (N.Y.) (Feat. Tupac & J. Phoenix)

Real Estate covering The Strokes’ “Barley Legal”

    2012 - 02.07

    .

. I get it, The Strokes’ “Is This It” album is one of, if not, the greatest indie albums of all time. In this modern era of “single track” downloads and “hit singles,” number 1’s and 2’s on the itunes most downloaded seems to be the mecca of the “made it’s” in the music industry. Very seldom do entire albums come along and hit you with same caliber that a great song does. Nowadays it’s doleful to think that an “album” is a lost art, but those are the snack facts on facts on facts. When bands do master the art of making the all inclusive, never-dull, full length LP that brings listeners to a state euphoria and mystifying, hair raising, salivating, masturbatingly exuberating bliss, tastefully tainted with perfection and imperfection so much so that it’s sublime fulcrum is that to a 16th century, patriarchal love child thriving in the evangelical, “do it yourself,” expansion era, with a solid, affluent foundation mongreled with a Jacksonian knack to pursue wealth, prosperity and happiness, the end result can be compared to an album such as “Is This It.”

. Released in the summer of 2001, it’s been more than 10 years, and this album still holds the perfect recipe on “how to make a perfect rock album.” There is no doubt that artists have since put out work with similar stylistic and harmonious aesthetics that do hold their own in the music world, but “Is This It” from a sound standpoint, recording standpoint, instrumental standpoint, lyrical standpoint, band image standpoint, bashed the fucking nail on the head six times over. While artists persevere for their own sounds in their respected genres and forms of “modus operendi” there is always a uniform understanding that they must pay homage to the fellows that shaped the independent music scene. I’m sure bands after establishing themselves must have thought, “Well, at this point the only thing left to do is pay tribute to The Strokes” and what better way to do that than to cover there beloved album, “Is This It.” Stereogum.com organized for bands to come to together and collaboratively cover the entire album. Bands like Peter, Bjorn & John, The Morning Benders and Heems but one band seemed to really incorporate their specific style while synthesizing the unmatched, uncanny sound of The Strokes, Real Estate.

. Real Estate, the chill-wave trio from Ridgewood, NJ in my opinion truly stole the show. I could imagine that it would be very hard to take such a masterpiece of a song such as “Barley Legal” and have the balls to do anything to it, but in decadent fashion they pulled it off. The first noticeable difference is the tempo, being Real Estate they are not known for staying ahead in the tune, instead they make their living sitting back,slow-riding reverb until the tide turns low. Who would ever think a sound about heartbeating regret and fast paced, unwanted nostalgia could be slowed to a degree of chill-wave, tone-heavy vibes? Oh right, fucking Real Estate knew that! In an interview for Stereogum.com, bassist, Alex Bleeker revealed that his love for the band, specifically his idol worship for Strokes guitarist, Albert Hammond Jr., prompted him to go out and make his first guitar buy, a white Fender Strat with a lightning bolt strap. Why would Real Estate ever shy away from an opportunity to directly please their child-hood rock gods? The wouldn’t, because their fucking Real Estate! In my opinion, their cover of “Is This It” certainly holds itself to a higher standard than the rest of the tracks on the tribute album. I don’t suggest the entire album because while “Is this It” speaks for it’s self, the cover album is still a cover, and not all bands, let alone anyone can reproduce music gold. In saying so, Real Estate came pretty fucking close, take a listen, take a download, take a fucking break out of your day, love JF.

Blast From The Past (Part 1)

    2012 - 02.01

    .

Before I start this off, I just want to say that these posts have nothing to do with Brendan Fraser’s questionable acting skills. No, this is all about remembering the good old days along with the music that has been the soundtrack to my (Stephen) life throughout the years. There are some songs on here that bring me back to specific moments, some that I can never find the heart to skip when they play on shuffle, and some that are just all around great jams that will always have a special place in my heart. Each day I will put up 10 new songs, ending with the top 10 on the last day. Hope you enjoy hearing some songs that you forgot about along with ones you have never heard before. Now, prepare for a journey through time…

    .

#30 – Before sophomore year, when asked what genres of music I listen to I would reply with, “Everything but country.” At some point I got over this phase, and ‘The Carolinian’ was one of the first country songs that helped me accomplish that.

Chatham County Line – The Carolinian

    .

#29 – Anyone who was alive during 2007 knows this song. As a single off The Game’s second album, The Doctor’s Advocate, this track went huge commercially. While The Game usually raps about his violent past, I especially like this song because he is sending out a positive message to young girls who think the only way to get out of the hood is dating someone famous.

The Game – Wouldn’t Get Far (Feat. Kanye West)

    .

#28 – Besides Eminem, who was every white kid’s first favorite rapper, Kanye West was the first MC that I was truly enamored by. After his first album, The College Dropout, came out while I was in fifth grade I could not get enough of Kanye, and nothing has changed since then. ‘Family Business’ is one of the most feel good Kanye tracks of all time, and for that, it makes the list.

    Kanye West – Family Business

    .

#27 – Middle school was the first time I heard ‘Victory’, and it turned into one of those songs that I never stopped listening to. I guess Gangstarr is just one of those rap groups that will never go out of style as long as Hip-Hop lives.

    Gangstarr – Victory

    10) Tron Legacy: R3c0nfigur3d

    .

    .

This could be my favorite remix album ever. With remixes by The Glitch Mob, Crystal Method, Boys Noize, Pretty Lights, and many more, we get a techno spin on an already great electronic soundtrack.

    .

Daft Punk & M83 VS Big Black Delta – Fall (Remixed by M83 VS Big Black Delta)

    .

    9) The Weeknd – “House Of Balloons/Thursday”

    .

    .

I first heard The Weeknd in the promo for the last season of Entourage. Crazy falsetto vocals over a dubstepy instrumental with the gang walking in slow motion had me hooked. Then “House of Balloons” and “Thursday” came out on the same day and we knew how dope The Weeknd actually was. Not to mention, his first mixtape had a Drake guest track.

    .

    The Weeknd – Rolling Stone

    .

    8.  Adele – “21″

    .

    .

Adele > Gaga. Adele is overweight, sits down when she sings (even in music videos) and just doesn’t give a fuck. Maybe if Lady Gaga always played her music like she did on Howard Stern, she could have a chance at being as good as Adele’s sophomore album, “21.” I’ve seen grown men belting “Someone Like You.”

    .

Adele – Last Nite (The Strokes Cover)

    .

    7) Drake – “Take Care”

    .

    .

I’ve always enjoyed hearing Drake’s music but it wasn’t until “Take Care” that I listened to one of his songs over and over. Not just one song, but the whole album. It was all I listened to for 2 weeks. The production is amazing and the lyrics are real. Drake tells us stories about being famous, lonely and somewhere in between happy and sad. Below is probably my favorite song on the album, solely because there’s a harmonica solo from Stevie Wonder. Enjoy.

    .

Drake – Doing It Wrong (Feat. Stevie Wonder)

    .

    6) Beirut – “The Rip Tide”

    .

    [This video is bizarre]
    .

Us Site Of Sounders are big Beirut fans and were lucky enough to see them at Bonnaroo this Summer. Their latest album, “The Rip Tide,” is a much poppier version of their beautiful Bulgarian gypsy sound.

I Left My Wallet In El Segundo

    2011 - 10.17

I’m not seeing too many releases that I feel are worth posting; therefore, I have pulled up some gems from my Library. Enjoy

    .

My 2nd favorite Tribe song (1st one is Bonita Applebum).  I miss hip-hop that told funny stories.

I Left My Wallet In El Segundo-A Tribe Called Quest

    .

I don’t know anything about this artist except that he is from Toronto.  His music videos are professional quality and there was a rumor that he was affiliated with The Weeknd (this is not true).  I downloaded his mix-tape and that it was pretty decent.  This is certainly my favorite song off the tape.  He seems to be more of a hip-hop artist than an electronic artist.  However, this song certainly wobbles and blends hip-hop with some raw bass.  If you like- DL Mixtape HERE.

    Voodoo Child-Khat

    .

This is from an EP that Minnesota dropped a little while back.  His sound is very intense and I love it.

    Breathe-Minnesota

    .

If I were in a hurry to be somewhere, I would put this song on and zoom .

    Sylkill-Shinichi Osawa

    .

A friend showed me this guy a long time ago.  I personally like this song more for it’s instrumental, but this song is fresh. (Yes that is Modest Mouse-Float On)

    Float On-Cities Aviv

    .

I end this post with this song for a reason…because it is fucking ill.  Nowadays when I see the 10,000th biggie remix, I won’t download it.  On the other hand, I have not seen NWA get remixed as much as other old hip-hop artists.  This song is filfthy and it’s as if NWA got in a fight with Skrillex or something.  I don’t know if that’s the best description, but that’s how I see it.

    Starfucker Mixtape #1

    2011 - 05.11

Portland electronica band “Starfcuker” released a great mixtape about a month ago.  They take some of their songs and turn them into mashups along with remixing others, but due note that these are not by any means just regular a mashup.  With sick synthesizer riffs and bass melodies from starfucker, it really doesn’t sound like the vocals were ripped apart and thrown on some beat.  Each song flows really well and kind of shows a different side to the song.  Artists that they mashed with were: Gucci Mane, Shawty Lo, 50 Cent, Lil Jon & Ying Yang Twins, Lil’ Wayne, E-40, Three 6 Mafia, Soul Crate, Strength, Skeletron, & De La Soul.  Here are some of my favorites off the mixtape, but the whole thing can be downloaded by clicking HERE

I have not heard “In Da Club” outside of a middle school dance/Bar-Mitzvah, but this actually makes me want to listen to it again.

    50 Cent – In Da Club _ Starfucker – Julius-Starfucker

    De La Soul – Itzsoweezee _ Starfucker – Decatur-Starfucker

*NEW* Beastie Boys – Make Some Noise

    2011 - 04.06

(Mix Master Mike is unbelievable as well…)

    .

I could not be happier about two things. 1) Beastie Boys are still making music. 2) This song is GREAT. I’m sure that once their new album drops they’re do some minimal touring but I was lucky enough to see them at Bonnaroo two years ago and they were incredible. (I also can’t believe they don’t have a song called “Make Some Noise” already…)
