    Rotimi Interview

    2010 - 03.30

Rotimi is an R & B artist hailing from Chicago Illinois (via Maplewood New Jersey) where he is a senior at Northwestern University. Rotimi is American born but Nigerian at heart with an Igbo mother and a Yoruba father, he is most definitely true to his roots. His hit single “Beautiful Music” is currently being played on WGCI and received over 35,000 downloads on hotnewhiphop.com and Rotimi was named hotnewhiphops hottest new artists back in July 2009. On top of this he has opened for the likes of Fabolous (at Howard Homecoming 2009), Estelle, N.E.R.D., Bobby Valentino, Raekwon, and many more. Only time will tell what the future holds for this young artist, but I’ve got a good feeling about this one. Become a fan of Rotimi here, myspace here, and after check out his youtube page to  watch his hit single Beautiful Music.

    Rotimi: Beautiful Music

Rotimi: Already Know Ft. Dawn Richard

How would you describe your music or sound to someone who hasn’t heard you before?

I  would say it’s very unique, and with every song i try to hit each note with passion. I want the people to hear and feel that it comes from the heart

How is it being in school and trying to balance your quickly growing career?

I figured out that the key to being successful in both music and school is sacrifice. Instead of going out to party i go to the studio instead of going out to the club i do my homework.

What makes you truly unique is your family background. Can you talk about how that aspect of your life influences your music now?
Well, both of my parents are Nigerian. Coming from Nigerian parents, I grew up very cultured in music. They kept me very open minded so I listened to everything from FELA to Bob Marley to Keith Urban. Ironically I wasn’t raised on R and B

If not already answered above, where does the name Rotimi come from?

It’s Yoruba for “God stand by me”

Can you talk about the inspiration for your single Beautiful Music?

Well, I wanted to write a song about sex in a way that wasn’t obvious. Beautiful Music is a euphemism for sex . Different instruments could represent different ways of makin love; “we could do it accapella, jazz it up, we could do it classy and smooth, or we could do it auto-tune”.

Were you at all surprised by the overwhelming positive response to the song and music video?

I view it as a blessing, and I don’t take any of it for granted and I truly appreciate all the love that i’m getting. So thanks to all my fans

What has been your most memorable experience thus far in your career?

Performing and winning at the Apollo Theater when i was 15. All the great artists have performed there so for me it was a confirmation that I was on the right path.

How was it working with the legendary Dawn Richards on the song “Already Know”?

It was a dope experience. It was an honor to work with her. She’s very talented and I felt honored that she asked me to write the track

Who are some artists & producers you would like to work with in the future?

The Dream, Timbaland, and Drake just to name a few.

What’s next for Rotimi? New album any upcoming shows? Looking forward to graduating?

Well we’re working on pushing the single “Already Know” right now and we’re about to get back on our college tour and I’m super excited to graduate

Where can the viewers here more of your music or keep up with your moves?

Here are few solid new weekend melodies to feast those depraved fratty eardrums that have been corrupted by an onslaught of the usual garbage that girls insist upon listening to, giving the bros no option but submit their manhood in order for sexual favors later in the evening.  Hopefully here are a few songs we can all listen to in harmony.  Viva la basement.

This song has a super tight bass line that will over power neighboring frats with sounds of overwhelming dankness.

Bassnectar: Magical World feat. Nelly Furtado (Official)

Unfortunately, we had to post this song in a different format do to its untamed nature, which is too rancorous to be controlled directly by SOS.  dope song though…

    Lo-Fi-Fnk: Marchin’ In

Just a little weezy for your listening pleasure, hopefully he will still feel our love from inside his cold dark molestor-ridden jail cell.

    Lil’ Wayne: Blowing Up Fast

Hilltop finally comin back with this track, which actually dropped last summer.  Give it a listen…its no nosebleed section, but a solid showing nonetheless.

    Hilltop Hoods: Chris Farley

The Soundmen’s remix of Kid Cudi and Snoop’s That Tree has a sound that would make any space age disco band proud. I have to admit i did not like the original version of this track, but after hearing this remix i became a fan

Snoop Dogg feat Kid Cudi: That Tree (Soundmen Remix)

Feel Good Inc was what put Gorillaz on the map and I think this song will do the same for Allen Walker who perfectly touches it up turning it into an electronic ballad

Gorillaz: Feel Good Inc. (Allen Walker Remix)

Eric Solomon’s back at it again after beautifully remixing Passion Pit’s Moth Wings a few months back, this time re-doing The xx’s Crystalised. A slower song that picks up nicely in the middle. If your having a rough week this song is a nice transition listen into the weekend

The xx: Crystalised (Eric Solomon Remix)

Posted earlier this month, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros’ Home is up for round 2 with a new spin thanks to RAC remixes. Another mellow song with a nice whistling melody that cant help but make you relaxed.

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros: Home (RAC Remix)

A viewer submitted remix, Big-Z is a mere 16 years old but already has an extreme talent for remixes. Watch out for an interview and more tracks coming in the next few weeks

Big-Z Remixes: I Gotcha (Feat. Lupe Fiasco)

Here’s some music to move to. Breakfast Mountain knows how to party. If you dig these two tracks click on over to their myspace where you’ll find their album HOOOODED for free! They have a really sick chopped and screwed version of Kris Kross’ Jump on there that I’ll let you find for yourself. If that’s not your cup of tea, maybe give Chromatic Flights a try. They have a very mellow and appealing sound, well at least in my opinion. Phantogram and Toro Y Moi have been in heavy rotation for a good three weeks now at my house. I couldn’t help but post some more. Junk Culture is a one man beat making monster. Check out his debut album also by the name of West Coast. Finally, here’s a little teaser for MGMT’s new album Congratulations. If you are looking for another hit single like Kids keep looking, but I’m not saying that to discourage you from checking out the album. I had the privilege of listening to the entire CD today and I have to say I love their new sound. Not to mention the album art is some of the best I’ve seen. Enjoy

    Just Jamm It-Breakfast Mountain

    GIRKLS-Breakfast Mountain

    Sunset Bell-Chromatic Flights

Copenhagen back online after a few month hiatus, due to fast distances and obscure time zones.  Reggae is the essence of life as you will all recognize at some point, the sooner you come to terms with this fact, you will realize you are happier, cooler, and a more adept athlete.

    Pablo Moses: Revolutionary Dream

    Turbulence: Fire Pon Dem

    Sizzla: Taking Over

    Peter Tosh: Johnny B. Goode

Two songs sent from a viewer. Shout out to my man Chris from Dartmouth these tunes bump:

Haven’t heard from Big Boi in a while now, but he comes from one of my all time favorite groups so had to throw up this smooth soundin tune. Light up a bleezy for this one kids

    Big Boi: Fo Yo Sorrows

Where my basement rats at? This song will for sure fuel any late night dance party all over the country.

    Flosstradamus: Act a Fool (Ravestradamus)

Next we have a fresh new track that mashes up Jay Sean and Guns N Roses. I used to bump to GnR back in the day so its cool to hear a new spin on their music

DJs From Mars: Do You Remember Vs Sweet Child O’ Mine (Jay Sean vs. GnR)

Always could go for a Pursuit of Happiness remix and this one delivers. Dont know much about Slink’s remixes but this guy sure knows what’s up with this song. “Alright DJ put a loop on the recorddd”

Kid Cudi ft. MGMT: Pursuit of Happiness (Slinks Hangover Remix)
